South Korea leads the way in 5G commercialization...

With Alticast’s headquarters being based in Seoul, South Korea, we have a front row seat to the technological advances in the APAC region. We’ve said it before…this region is notorious for embracing industry-changing innovation (usually before anyone else in the world) and as we saw earlier this year, 5G is no exception. Alticast's Marketing Manager, Media Services Division, Jimi Kang, gives us a glimpse of the 5G rollout that happened last month in South Korea:

On April 5, South Korea, one of the world’s most advanced mobile nations, launched a government-coordinated, 5G next-generation commercial rollout of mobile services nationwide. They claimed it as the “world’s first nation with a full-fledged 5G network”.

One month since the rollout, the South Korean government (The Ministry of Science and ICT) announced that there are already 260,000 5G mobile subscribers in South Korea. Of the three mobile operators – Korea Telecom (KT), SK Telecom (SKT) and LG U+ – KT reports that they have acquired 100K of those users while SKT and LG U+ have yet to report their figures. By year’s end, it is predicted that there will be 1 million 5G users in South Korea.

Since the Pyeong Chang Winter Olympics, these three telcos have been actively promoting 5G media services under their IPTV brand. Each telco is offering media services that tap into the benefits 5G technology offers, namely ultra-high data speed and better support for AI and VR with low latency.  All of their services include premium quality video, VR/AR, virtual video games and sports content. Highlights and differentiating factors of each company’s promotional packages are:

Korea Telecom:

Multiple Viewing Angles– Users will have access to “Pro Baseball Live” and be able to choose from two viewing angles – “Position View” (allows users to choose and watch from nine different angles during live games) and “Matrix View” (allows users to watch time-sliced live video). Users that have KT’s OTT service, Olleh TV Mobile, will be able to access and watch HD videos from the well-known K-Pop program, “M Countdown," from five different angles.

VR– KT is touting to the "world’s first VR game" that uses both VR and smart phone devices. A video call app “narle” utilizes 3D avatars and AR emoji features.

Live streaming of content– Video game matches and user-created content will be offered in 360-degree video.

SK Telecom:

Mobile Streaming Service– Live content will be delivered 15 seconds earlier than any other OTT service via the 5G network

VR – SKT’s “5GX Social VR” will allow users to come together to watch 12K UHD content (i.e. baseball games) in virtual space with other users with a viewing angle that is 3-times wider compared to existing UHD. An exclusive Idol audition program, “Program 101” will be offered in VR and a program called “Speak It” will provide one-on-one English tutoring. SKT is also working with Naintic, Inc (known for the popular “Pokemon Go”) and will roll “Harry Potter AR” in the near future.

Cloud Streaming Games– SKT is working with various global partners on incorporating cloud-streaming games to their service.

LG U+:

Content/Viewing Angles in 5g – ‘U+ Baseball”, “U+ Golf”, and “U+ Idol Live” will be offered in 5G and will allow users to zoom in and out of different video spots.

VR/AR– Users will be able to go on a one-on-one date with the “Star of the Month” (Korean actors/actresses and K-Pop stars). For example, the viewer will go on a virtual date with the star to a Cirque de Solei circus show or attend a horror movie. In “360-Pyung Change Degree view,” the user will see the star in 3D, making it feel as they are right next to him/her.

Cloud gaming- U+ has exclusivity for a Nvidia cloud game, “GeForce NOW”. Users will be allowed to play over 500 games on their 5G smartphones and IPTV at home. LG has installed the ‘GeForce NOW’ game servers on their data center in Korea and the rollout is expected shortly.

If this is any indication, 5G is poised to revolutionize the way video is delivered and consumed not only in Korea but worldwide, perhaps disrupting the television industry once again.
