Solving Service Discovery Issues One Patent at a Time

Television's evolution from a one-way transmission service to a two-way communication platform has made possible not only more content choices, but also advanced search and discovery, shopping and SNS notification services, chat capabilities and other functionalities. The challenge operators have faced is removing the technology obstacles that have prevented subscribers from quickly identifying and using those services.

An Alticast solution that was recently granted United States Patent Number 9756396, "Method for Providing SNS Associated with Television Broadcasting and Apparatus Thereof," was created to the complexity bulls by the horns. Rather than force users to search through several interface levels to find the desired service, the Alticast patent speeds subscribers to certain services through the use of short-cut keys.

This report describes how the patent includes elements that not only define key input and content identification functionalities, but also "an option interface decision part configured to decide an option interface for the identified content. The option interface can include an indicator for accessing at least one service of cloud-uploading the identified content, transferring to a personal device, performing a related search, adding to favorites, and sharing with another user. The content can include at least one of a live program, an on-demand program, a menu, SNS information, a chat message and a product."

The report details at length other benefits of the patent, but ultimately it comes down to the ability of an Alticast innovation to solve long-standing problems and to unlock new opportunities for subscriber engagement and pay-TV operator revenue.
