Faced with the need to create an interactive service platform that could overcome the limitations of one-way satellite broadcasting, South Korea’s largest satellite broadcaster could simply have deployed a conventional OTT service to mobile devices and PC browsers.
Instead, KT Skylife broke new ground with the launch
of TELEBEE, a service that brings the diverse content, flexible user experience
and intuitive navigation of online video not only to mobile devices, but also to
the big-screen environment of television.
Using TVs connected via Xiaomi Mibox set-top boxes and the first
commercialization of Android 7.0, KT Skylife has created a service that breaks
free of service upgrade and expansion limitations and has a flexible system
infrastructure to upgrade or renew services as conveniently as IPTV and cable
operators can.
When we began working with KT Skylife on what would
become TELEBEE, it was clear that they had some specific considerations. They
recognized the importance of luring technology-savvy younger viewers away from
direct-to-home services. They understood
how a diverse content lineup of VOD, online video clips and content syndication
could attract new subscribers. And they knew that an Android-based implementation
would expedite their ability to deliver the service across all viewing
platforms.
With that in mind, the choice of Alticast’s new
Ambient TV platform made perfect sense. Ambient TV supports cross-platform
delivery of diverse online video content, including traditional TV content like
channels and VOD. , It provides abundant source metadata to make TELEBEE
content more dynamic and intriguing for the users. And its robust content
protection system – AltiProtect DRM – ensures enhanced security by supporting diverse
content license management and powerful authentication management.
By using Ambient TV and Alticast’s end-to-end
deployment capabilities, KT Skylife has created a template for how service
providers worldwide can create a dynamic and intriguing service that truly is “TV
Everywhere.” TELEBEE is showing how a content-rich lineup – in its case,
including YouTube, the Korean web video portal Naver V Live and content
syndication services such as Korea’s top OTT service, Watcha – and an interface
that leverages Alticast’s extensive experience in UI design can attract viewers
and sustain their interest..
Where does TELEBEE go from here? We can tell you that
KT Skylife is working with national broadcasters to integrate advertising
capabilities that will drive monetization of the service. Like everything else KT Skylife does, their
path to success will be worth watching.
