Listen! Can you hear voice control growing?

A couple of months ago, we reported here how IoT and voice control technologies had stolen the show at CES.  Since then, there’s been this nagging voice in the back of our head – wouldn’t it be something if it turned out to be Alexa? – that we should revisit the issue.

Among the latest news is this research from Parks Associates that talks about the massive growth of voice control devices, particularly in broadband homes. The report found that between Q4 2015 and Q4 of last year, adoption of smart speakers with voice assistants swelled from 5% to 12%.  Parks’ estimate is that 15.3 million Amazon Echo devices were sold in 2016 alone.

There’s no question that the opportunity for broadband providers is significant.  Comcast has made voice control a salient point in promotion of its Xfinity service.  Earlier this year, DISH became the first TV provider to announce direct compatibility with Amazon’s Echo and Echo Dot Alexa devices.

As the buzz over voice control grows, we’re increasingly finding ourselves immersed in the conversation.  In a white paper that was made available through Light Reading and Digital TV Europe earlier this year, we highlighted steps that could be taken to ensure that voice-activated authentication of devices and systems is secure. This month, we will be showing a voice assistance demo that already has market traction in our booth at NAB.  We invite you to stop by to see how we’re fueling the voice control revolution.
